An Insider’s Guide to Video Game Career.

I just received my copy of this book this week, and I can’t recommend it highly enough to all the young graduates aspiring to join this crazy industry of ours. Drawn from over 100 interviews from various game professionals, this book is a must read.

The author covers every aspect of game development you can imagine, from programming, and art, to management and publishing, touching on audio, journalism and half a dozen other areas in between. Each section draws heavily on the dozens of interviews conducted from industry professionals both young and old.

The book does no try to skirt around the quality of life issues. Every profession is presented with its pros and cons, providing a balanced view of the reality in the games industry.

If you’re looking to get into the games industry, or wondering what life is like, then pick up this book. If you’re currently in the games industry, then you should already know most of this, but you should pick it up anyways for the excellent Penny-Arcade art.

Finally, you should also check out the afterword by Seanbaby which didn’t make it into the actual book due to being too offensive.
