Please read our update on this subject.

We have recently obtained through our contacts in the industry a summary of a high level meeting of the major players involved in Sony’s network platform (NP). This meeting took place in early February and involved representatives from Sony Japan, Sony America, 1st party and world wide studios (WWS) developers as well SCE-RT.

The meeting primarily revolved around the upcoming 1.60 SDK update, due in late March (to coincide with the European launch of the PS3. Clarifications on the features which would and would not be present in the update were discussed, as well as future plans for further features. This week, we’ll be bringing you daily updates on a variety of areas addressed in this meeting. This will help form a clearer picture of where Sony is heading with its online platform, and how far it has come along in the few months since it launched.

Today we start with background downloading. Sony has let slip that background downloading will finally be made available in the 1.60 firmware update. Unfortunately, users will end up being a bit confused, and then frustrated by what background downloading actually entails. Background downloading only functions within the context of the Cross Media Bar (XMB). Specifically, there will be no downloading while the user is a playing a game.

Users of the Xbox 360 will be familiar with how background downloading is supposed to be implemented. On the 360, the only time a download is interrupted is when you are playing an actual online game (where your latency could be affected by a concurrent download), or when you are downloading a game update. The rest of the time, whether you’re in the dashboard, messaging or chatting to your friends, or playing a game, your background downloads continue.

On the PS3, when you enter a game, your downloads will be paused and queued up, to be restarted later when you exit back to the XMB. The reason for this is that the PS3 needs extra system resources (primarily memory) to do background downloading, and as such could affect game play.

New APIs were discussed which allow background downloading during less resource intensive sections of a game (such as the front end menu), but such functionality will only be considered once the 1.60 update is out the door. Even so, games would have to allocate extra memory need to be able to support this.

So, background downloading is coming in the 1.60 update, but only in an extremely limited fashion. Essentially, you have to remain in the XMB to make use of it. This is bound to rub some people the wrong way.

Check in tomorrow where we’ll examine Sony’s Commerce system.

If this is true, it does not seem much like background downloading at all.

The more I find out about Sony’s online stuff, the more it seems to be half thought-out, and poorly put together. I recently wrote about this little gem…

Modeps: No, it doesn’t much, does it…

FreakyZoid: Unfortunately, it gets worse. They did put a lot of work into the design, it just seems like they designed it with the wrong purpose in mind. You’ll see what I mean by the end of the week.

Last time I checked, any regular computer can easily background download and play games, so much for Sony promising me a new computer.

It seems microsoft may have been right when they said that sony do not have the technical DNA to do anything related to online properly, is the PS3 as power as presumed if it can t do a bit of background downloading..

Sounds good to me. All of these firmware upgrades are small stepping stones to something spectacular. The service is free so how do some people justify complaining about it? It is because they’re Xbox 360 owners that won’t buy any other console and deep down they’re unsatisfied for paying for a service that should be free, which is available on the PS3.

[…] A Sony prepara o update do firmware do seu videogame PlayStation 3 para coincidir com o lançamento do produto na Europa. A atualização estará disponível no fim de março e traz pelo menos uma novidade interessante: o download em segundo plano. […]

But the PS3 already reserve much more memory for the system (64MB main memory + 32 MB video memory). Isn’t that enough for this? Microsoft do this with only 32MB.

yes they did put away memory don’t believe this guy, he’s just trying to stir something up, you can sense his bias in the article anyway. Don’t get me wrong I have a 360 and absolutley love the background downloading, but to just come uot and say he got this info from his “insiders” is a load of crap,we’ll see with time.

Henry - I have both systems and can say that the Sony online system blows. The firmware updates have lacked a special change since the thing came out. The lack of proper background downloading is plain silly for such a super computer (as they claim it to be). I dont mind paying for XBL at all why can’t you accept its just better? It works and its planned out around user needs. In the end, your little dig as a fanboy made no sense and stinks of blindly following Sony’s b.s. Small stepping stones to something spectacular - yeah ok.

[…] Inner Bits is reporting on information that firmware version 1.6 for the PS3 will allow users to utilize background downloading from the Sony Online Store. However, as Bill Clinton will tell you, your satisfaction with this may depend on what your definition of “background” is. […]

@henry_the_horse:

You do not need to pay for the gold service. You can play arcade games, play “local” multiplayer games, download , message, chat, and browse xbox live just fine with the silver service, and it is free.

You know I have a 360, and this is uncategorically true. The 360 will suspend a download upon launch of a game and will resume when it so deems it is safe, the circumstances when it feels safe to resume a download have yet to uncovered.

And until the firmware actually is released I’d just throw this in all the other rumors, just that a rumor. The link provided speak nothing of this functionality. Sources would be nice.

The 360 suspends downloads ONLY when the game requires bandwidth for updates/leaderboards/online play. No big secret. Certain games are always connecting to Live (PGR3 for example).

Sony don’t have anywhere near the software expertise in terms of getting the most out of hardware.

i hope the wii could get this function sooner or later

Sean, I wish I could provide my actual sources, but I would be doing both myself and my contacts harm by doing so. InnerBits only exists because can protect the identities of the developers who write for us, myself included. We’d quickly be out of jobs otherwise.

In less than a month’s time, you should be able to accurately judge our credibility.

w/e, dude its tight that sony is making updates as soon as they can and nobody’s paying them. its a free network and it works perfectly with online games resistnace with 40 players is basically flawless
i thinks its cool how sony’s unlockin more Cell power in order to be able to do this type of thing when its a brand new chip whereas microsoft has had a long time with their hardware and sony’s already catching up
idk Sony’s a damn good company

Interesting - I find it odd that we all saw Phil Harrison demonstrate on stage at DICE how background downloading worked… we all watched it… he was doing it in and out of game… pretty sure when he demo’d Singstar for us… but MEH - who would believe a video, anyhow, i mean… live right on stage for everyone to see… I’ll believe this article with “industry sources” over a video at DICE any day! ROFL. What idiot wrote this article? Idiot wannabe journalist.

Jack: what you saw at DICE was all within the confines of the SingStar game. SingStar has an excellent implementation of streaming done for their game, but it’s strictly limited to their game. Read what I wrote more carefully, and you’ll see what I mean.

DICE video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDHxDm9W48U (singstar demo is about 6 minutes in).

this is stupid. I know for a fact Sony reserves some memory for the OS. I have installed YDL on my ps3, and only 197mb shows up in memory info, meaning Sony has reserved 59mb for the OS unlike what the article says nikka

[…] There’s an interesting series of articles over at innerbits discussing rumored improvements to the PS3 online interface - aka the 1.60 firmware upgrade. It’s a good read, and if real, will help the PS3 quite a bit toward being a gaming system capable of supporting an online community. That said (and you knew this was coming), it should also be pretty obvious that Sony made a fundamental mistake when designing the PS3 that is going to impact their plans this entire generation. …………………………..     <rant> You want to know the absolutely most frustrating thing about this? This could have all been avoided had the PS3 not been rushed to market. I can tell you from personal experience all of these traps were things the Live and Platform teams thought about and planned ahead for… which is why we’re able to deliver the experience we are now. There’s no reason Sony could not have done the same - and as a gamer (and not a Microsoft employee), it frustrates the living hell out of me. Right… enough said. </rant>   ”   now this is what i find a little disturbing. I don’t mind if sony is doing stuff right, after all they got so much to loose. but what i don’t get is that we all bought a system to play games so why exactly are we so worried if they don’t have enough ram to do other stuff. Isn’t that what the os is suppose to manage. Sony is a hardware company and seriously i belive they have done a great job with the ps3 os, even if microsoft has spolied us with their community and features in the system. but let as not forget this when the 360 came out if was basically a game system with very little ‘features’ on the live side. it is only after listening to the community that microsoft finally released interesing updates and patches to the os. i think sony is trying to play catch up now but we still have to give them credit right. what do you think you think the industry might be going down too hard on sony or is sony just plain being deaf. […] For comparison, PS3 developers have to deal with a system that has memory split into two 256MB banks, one of which is reserved for graphics only. A large portion of both the memory banks are reserved for the system. On top of that, games that want to support other features, like friends lists or in-game commerce, take an additional memory hit. http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060413-6600.html indicates that a total of 96MB is reserved for the system on PS3. http://www.innerbits.com/blog/2007/02/27/ps3-online-background-downloading-the-sony-way/ indicates that 9MB is required for friends lists (and 60MB for in-game commerce!).
